Winn Road and Antioch Road Sidewalk and Intersection Improvements, Phase I & II | Kansas City, MO
VSM Engineering designed and developed construction plans and specifications. Phase 1 included design and selected construction services of 1,200 LF of urban sidewalk along an old MoDOT highway. The project added sidewalk, retaining wall, and 840 LF of storm sewer ranging from 15-in to 30-in RCP. It included two commercial driveways redesigned to accommodate ADA requirements. A floodplain permit was required for this site as it was in FEMA regulated floodway. VSM was able to minimize project cost by keeping the existing MoDOT 15 x 10 cross culvert in place and using an existing 30-in culvert entrance. VSM also did an extensive bid evaluation of the nine bidders and made bid recommendations for contract award. The council accepted the recommended bid and the selected contractor successfully completed the project.
Phase 2 included roadway and intersection improvements. We varied the typical curb and asphalt roadway section to meet floodway requirements. During the construction phase, the city did the day-to-day inspection and VSM assisted as needed. VSM reviewed shop drawings, answered RFI’s and recommended change orders. We also worked with the contractor on a change order to realign the storm sewer at the second commercial driveway to make it easier to construct while still maintaining the storm capacity.
